Obituary

Troy Dean Travis, also known as Double T, 52, of Smith River California was born January 31st 1970 inCrescent City, California to Richard and Florene Travis. He passed away at home surrounded by familyand friends on December 5th , 2022. He attended Del Norte High School, Class of ’88, where he whitestarred in baseball.
Out of High School Troy worked at Arcata Redwood as a choker setter. Eventually he found his career atTolowa Dee-Ni Nation. Troy was a proud tribal member of the Tolowa Dee-Ni Nation. He worked therefor 25 years making him the longest tribal employee. His passion for supporting his tribe began as ayoung boy helping his grandpa with cleaning up the cemetery. He carried this passion through his entirelife.
Troy met his wife Nicole Travis in December of 1988 where they started their life together followed bythe birth of their first son, Tyler Travis in December of 1989. Together they share 9 children and 13grandchildren. Over the years they also opened their home to many foster children.Troy’s love for baseball didn’t end when he graduated from high school. He started coaching youthbaseball when Del Norte Little League was first formed in Crescent City. He coached both baseball andsoftball through DN Little League for many years. Although his love for the game was strong his love forgetting the youth involved and bringing families to the field was his driving force. Over the last coupleyears his health kept him from coaching on the field but that didn’t stop him from attending games. Hishonks from the outfield quickly became a signature sound and his children and grandchildren alwaysknew when he was cheering them on. When Troy wasn’t on the field with the youth he wasparticipating with the local men’s softball league in both Crescent City and Brookings. He will beremembered for his pitching and his constant heckling from the mound, all out of fun. Eventually hisolder sons would be seen playing right alongside of him.
Troy was passionate about many things in life but he was most passionate about hunting and fishing. Hebegan hunting and fishing as a young boy with his grandparents and parents. He passed this traditiononto his own children, grandchildren and friends. He earned the name “Buckmaster” for his ability tobring in 4 point bucks. After long days of chasing monster bucks through the mountains he could befound sitting around deer camp sharing stories and drinking ice cold beer with his family and friends. Those evenings and shared stories will forever be cherished by the people who were able to participatein them. Troy would always be somewhere on the river during Salmon and Steelhead season. He lovedtaking others down the river in his drift boat and sharing in the experience of catching them a fish. Aftera successful landing his Indian call could be heard traveling down the river. His legacy in the outdoorswill continue in the children, grandchildren and friends that he shared these experiences with.Above all else, Troy loved his family. If you were his friend, then you were his family. Troy’s love had noboundaries. His children were his best friends, and he shared all his love and passion for life with them. When Troy became a grandpa, he found a new generation to pass his passion for life onto. He won overthose little hearts by cheering them at all school and extracurricular events and sneaking them candywhen he thought no one was looking.
