Rufus Bragg

July 23rd, 1957 - June 5th, 2018

Obituary

It is with great sadness that the loved ones of Rufus Bragg announce his passing on June 5, 2018, at the age of 60 years. Rufus was born on July 23, 1957, in Alexandria, Virginia. He spent most of his childhood in the Washington D.C. area, until 1969, when he went to Boys Town in Nebraska, where he stayed until 1977. From 1977-1979, he attended Chadron State College in Nebraska. During this time he also joined the National Guard on October 13, 1977, in which he served until October 12, 1983. After his college experience in Nebraska, Rufus moved to Oregon in 1979 and began working for Timber Lake Job Corps, where he worked until he retired in 2010. Many people in the Estacada community also know Rufus from his many years of coaching both Middle School Wrestling and High School Football, between 1986 and 2018. The work Rufus did with athletes in the Estacada area has touched countless lives and ensures he will live on through the spirit of service to others that he has modeled for them. There will be Catholic Services held on Friday, June 22nd at 11:00 AM, at Saint Aloysius Catholic Church, and A Celebration of Rufus’s life will be held at 2:00PM, on Saturday, June 23, at the Estacada High School Commons.

Memories & Tributes

I just found out about this and I am an old timer in the life of Rufus -- we worked together at the Pine Ridge Job Corps in Chadron Ne - something that I want to mention is that before Rufus came to boys town he was involved in wrestling in washington DC - and folks it is in the record books if you look it up - Rufus Bragg won the heavyweight title in wrestling for all of washington DC in his age group. I think thats a pretty big accomplishment - in the description of Rufus I can't see that his work at pine ridge is mentioned - but he was there all the time I worked there - when I was getting ready to graduate college and quit the pine ridge job corps Rufus was getting ready to go back to visit with some friends from boys town -- so I went with him in his trans am - the one with the eagle on the hood - we drove to a lake in iowa - where he hooked up with friends and staff from boys town - its a really good memory. I am ex military and Rufus was like that - one of those kind of friends - since I was young then I didn't pay attention to things like that - but I see now that he was a good friend and I thank him for all the good times we had in chadron. what surprised me was he stayed in oregon all those years - meanwhile I moved all over the place - so it kind of tells me he must have made some really good friends who became his family - so for all those posted before me - you must be some really great people. I think Rufus really deserved to find that after all he went through. By the way - the picture posted on here - kind of weird to see since I had not seen him since 1982 - but it sure captures that mischief twinkle in his eye perfect. a hamilton
