Obituary

Richard J. Crist passed away on April 13, 2012, at 82 years of age. He was born in Norton, Kansas to Wallace and Ethel (McCabe) Crist. While still a young child, his family moved to Modesto, California. He attended schools in Modesto and graduated from Modesto Jr. College and then Humboldt State University, majoring in forestry. His education was interrupted by the Korean War. He served in the United States Army as a cryptanalyst in the Army Security Agency.

While on leave with a friend in Minnesota, he met his future wife, Faith. They were married in Minnesota in 1956. They spent the early years of their marriage living in southern California, Modesto and Minnesota. Richard accepted a position in Crescent City in 1962 teaching forestry. His career lasted 30 years and ranged from serving as Dean of Students to teaching biology at Del Norte High School. He spent the last ten years of his teaching career as an instructor at Bar-O-Ranch.

He had a deep and abiding love for the beauty of the area and spent many enjoyable hours fishing, hunting and appreciating the outdoors.

Richard is survived by Faith, his wife of 55 years, daughter Abbie and son-in-law Steve Yearout, daughter Carrie, son Layne and daughter-in-law Kirsten, grandson Owen, niece Julie Gomez and step-sister Veronica Lewis, as well as many members of Faiths family in Minnesota.

A celebration of Richards life will be held on Sunday April 22 from 2-4 p.m. at the family home in Douglas Park. A tribute to his life will be at 3 p.m.

Memorials may be made in Richards name to the Del Norte Scholarship Foundation.
