Obituary
Phyllis Jeanne Orman, 89 of Greenwood, IN passed away on the early morning of Tuesday, January 24, 2024.
Phyllis was born June 1, 1934 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Lenos and Nathan Combs. She was one of six children and often recounted happy memories of her childhood. She credited her mother with modeling and encouraging her children to value family relationships.
She was a proud wife of Max E. Orman for 62 years until he passed away in October of 2017. Phyllis retired from Lowell Elementary School after working for 20 years as a teaching assistant. She often commented that she would have done it even if they hadn’t paid her.
Her faith was important to her. She was a long-time member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, where for many years she taught children’s Sunday School. She prayed faithfully for her family, friends or anyone who expressed a need.
Phyllis and Max traveled extensively across the United States visiting 49 states. Their travels included many stops in national parks, numerous scenic drives, camping, several trips out west, and returning to visit areas they had lived in earlier years. They enjoyed staying off the beaten route and rarely visited tourist destinations.
Phyllis was a prolific letter writer. Usually, these notes were ones of encouragement or appreciation written to her family, friends, and coworkers. These letters were valued by their recipients.
Phyllis showed her patriotism by always wearing U.S. Air Force and American flag lapel pins. She was happy to talk about the years spent living in various locations across the country during Max’s enlistment in the U.S. Air Force. She was also proud of her son’s and grandsons’ U.S. Air Force service/careers.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Steven (Helen) Orman; her daughters Rebecca (Kent) Conger and Michele Orman; her grandchildren Amanda Orman, Emma (Jacob) Masters, Seth Conger, C.J. Conger and Craig Orman; her great-grandchildren Caylyn Kirby, Landon Masters and Grayson Masters.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, mother, step-father, one brother, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm, Monday, January 29, 2024 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood, with Michael Duggan, officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
