Obituary
Paul David Salter, 87, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2024 at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born November 20, 1936 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born November 20, 1936 in Indianapolis, Indiana, a son of the late Ernest Ruben and Martha Ann (Grimes) Salter.
Paul served as a machinist in the United States Navy during the Korean War, USS HAAS DE 424. Post-service, Paul went on to be in the first graduating class of General Hospital paramedics. Paul was truly a jack of all trades and had a career of a hair stylist, hypnotist, truck driver, delivery driver and a security guard for the City Market in central Indianapolis.
He enjoyed singing gospel music with different quartets ,Sons of God, Happyaires, Gospel Express, Gospel Stewards and the Sanctuary Quartet and the Sounds of Praise Quartet, who went on to win “Group of the Year” from the Indiana Gospel Music Association in 1993. Paul dedicated his life to serving Christ and enjoyed ministering the word of God through music. He also enjoyed inventing gadgets around the house, playing the harmonica and spending time with his grand and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Iris Lavonne (Haymaker) Salter, daughter, Lavonna (Doug) Milligan; granddaughters, Elizabeth (Clayton) Stewart and Erica (Collins) Swindle; grandsons, Tanner Swindle and Aerick Milligan along with nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Ethel (Salter) McCloud.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by two brothers, Truman and Ernie and two sisters Eldora and Ruth.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Southport Church of the Nazarene, 920 E Southport Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46227. Military honors will be conferred by a contingent from the United States Navy and the Indy Metropolitan Military Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am until time of service also at the church.
