Obituary

Dr. Monty Dean Hiatt, 78, of Dobson, passed away Sunday morning, April 7, 2024, at his home.  Dr. Hiatt was born October 12, 1945, in Surry County, one of six children born to the late James Callis and Margaret Ann Sutphin Hiatt.  A man of strong faith, Monty lived his life honorably and served his community.  Not only was he an academic scholar and basketball star, he also was a missionary, pharmacist, and respected dentist who was loved by many.  As many who loved and appreciated him for his artistry and skills, his family loved him for being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  “Gampo,” as his granddaughter, Esther, affectionately called him, always smiled bright when she was around.  His memory will be cherished forever.  He is survived by his wife of almost 52 years, Carolyn Holder Hiatt; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Sgt. Andrew D. Everhart; a granddaughter, Esther Grace Everhart; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Nancy Tame and Lois Ann and Dr. Wayne Z. McBride; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Max R. and Dorothy Hiatt, Leon Hiatt, and Patricia Hafen Hiatt; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Dr. Hiatt was preceded in death by a brother, James Kay Hiatt; a sister-in-law, Shirley Hudson Hiatt; and a brother-in-law, David Tame.   The funeral service will be held Monday, April 15, 2024, at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints – Dobson Ward, with Bishop Kendric Wait officiating.  Interment will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the church.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
