Obituary

Marcus Roscoe Cook, affectionately known as Roscoe, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2025, at the age of 89, following a courageous battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He resided in Beaver Creek, Oregon, and will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Vila Rae Cook, with whom he shared a wonderful marriage since June 5, 1959, in Hermiston, Oregon.

Roscoe is survived by his son, Allyn Marcus Cook of Beaver Creek, Oregon, and his daughter, Theresa Renae Murphy of Murrieta, California. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rhonda Mae Cook, who passed away in 2011. Roscoe took great pride in being a grandfather to his two grandchildren, Megan E. Alvstad and Austen Reiley, both of Phoenix, Arizona.

Born on October 7, 1935, in Amigo, West Virginia, Roscoe moved to Irrigon, Oregon, at the age of 15. He was the son of John Marcus Cook and Dolly Josephine Vines Cook. Throughout his life, Roscoe embraced his family and built strong connections within his community. He is also survived by his brother, Robert E. Cook of Oak Harbor, Washington, a retired U.S. Navy veteran, and Carol Birksel of Downsville, New York. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Naomi Hurn and Wanda Stanley, both of Irrigon, Oregon.

In his professional life, Roscoe dedicated himself to the trade of barbering, beginning his formal education at barber school in Portland in 1960. He decided instead to pursue a plumbing apprenticeship that led to a 37-year career as a journeyman plumber, marked by dedication and skill.

Roscoe proudly served his country in the Navy from 1954 to 1959, stationed in Long Beach, California, with a tour of duty in Japan. During his service, he worked in the broiler room on a destroyer, contributing to the Navy's efforts during a significant era.

Beyond his professional achievements, Roscoe had a deep appreciation for nature and enjoyed fishing and hunting, particularly in Alaska, where he formed lasting friendships and created cherished memories with family.
