Obituary

Mary Lucile Miller was born to Locke and Elizabeth Miller of Youngstown, Ohio, on October 7, 1923. She was raised initially on a farm until the farm was lost and the family separated by the Great Depression. The two youngest children, Lucile and older sister Lois, age 7 and 10, were sent to Jacksonville to live with their mother's older brother, James VanVorhis and his family. Uncle Jim raised them and educated them through college with the help of his daughter Isabell. Bell was just a few years older than the two girls and they remained close throughout their lives.

Lucile graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville and went on to Florida State College for Women, graduating with a diploma signed by Doak Campbell in 1943. Her Spanish studies led to a wartime job as a censor opening and reading outbound mail to Cuba. She married Newton Clement Slade Jr in 1945 and they had one son, Clement Lawrence Slade. She worked from then on as a homemaker but she was constantly involved with clubs and volunteer work. She served as President of the Jacksonville League of Women Voters later in life.

She was predeceased by her parents and her five brothers and sisters, Dorothy, Pauline, Lawrence, Vern and Lois. Newton Clement Slade, Jr died in 1990 after 45 years of marriage. She was married later in life to John McAuley who predeceased her. She mourned the loss of her grandson Christopher Lawrence Slade in 1995.

She is survived by her son Clement Lawrence Slade, MD (Kathleen), two grandchildren Benjamin Slade and Mary Harmon (Gordon) and four great grandchildren, Christian, Bennett & Avery Slade and Noah Harmon. Bell's daughter Davron and husband Carlos Cardenas have been devoted.

There will be a family graveside service at a future date at the H. Warren Smith Cemetery in Jacksonville Beach, with her sister Lois' daughter, the Rev. Priscilla Wood, officiating.

Arrangements are entrusted to LOHMAN FUNERAL HOME ORMOND, 733 W Granada Blvd, Ormond Beach, FL 32174, 386-673-1100 www.lohmanfuneralhomes.com
