Obituary

James Elwood “Emo” Mello was born August 10th, 1951 in Crescent City, CA and passed away unexpectedly at home on November 10th, 2021.

Emo grew up on his family’s ranch in Del Norte County and worked in the area’s fishing and timber industries. He retired as an arborist, climbing trees into his late 60’s.

Emo was an avid runner throughout his adulthood and won the Avenue of the Giants marathon in the master’s division, overall winner of the Crescent City’s Fourth of July run, as well as winning several regional races.

Emo was known to be always on-the-go and full of life. He enjoyed hunting, driving his 1969 Roadrunner and motorcycle, reading and spending time with his family and friends.

Emo was generous, and fun to be around and he will be greatly missed.

Emo is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Gooch) and his parents Elwood and Emma Mello.

Emo is survived by his sons, Richard (Jennifer) and Dominic (Maia), sisters: Jeannie, Cindy, Judy and Linda, and granddaughters: Rachel, Paula, Hailey, Maddy, Avery and Lola and grandsons: Haden and Emmett.

Private family services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Crescent City where Emo was buried next to his wife, Mary.
