Born in Holland, MI, he grew up and began attending elementary, middle and a freshman year of high school in South Haven, Michigan. He moved to Florida in 1991, transferring to Orange Park High School. He joined the swim team there (having competed since age 6), where he built some lifelong friendships, which developed into a surfing entourage, enjoying local swells, travelling the East coast, and even many international surf trips, including Africa, Costa Rica, and Portugal. James owned and operated E4 Electric Company. He enjoyed surfing, snowboarding, sailing, disc golfing, the ocean, photographing nature scenes, and any outdoor activity.
James leaves behind countless cherished and dear friends and family who admired his free spirit and unwavering willingness to lend an ear or share a laugh with anyone in need.
He is predeceased by his father, Jon A. Behncke and step-father Richard F. Henning.
He is survived by his beloved children, Michael and Rose, his mother, Anita, step-mother, Jan, his brother, Rob and his wife Olga and many other family and friends.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held at Vero Beach pier on May 4th at 10AM, and we will gather to celebrate the memories he leaves behind and the legacy of warmth and friendship he brought into our lives. James enriched so many lives and will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
