In Loving Memory of

Glenna L. Goos

October 4th, 1935 - May 24th, 2020

Obituary

Longtime Estacada resident, Glenna Goos, died in Gresham on Sunday, May 24, 2020. She was 84. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Private entombment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park Mausoleum. Glenna Lou Mattoon was born October 4, 1935 in Portland, Oregon to Glen and Helen (Goble) Mattoon. Glen worked in the woods as a logger and in her childhood years, her family often moved to where work could be found in Oregon and Washington. She grew up as an only child and as an adult, would tell stories about playing with the neighbor kids down the road or her best pals from school. After graduating from Estacada High School, Glenna attended PSU with a major in Theater. On October 9, 1965 she married Gunther Goos. They had attended high school together and made their home in Estacada, where they have resided for almost 55 years. Glenna worked at Coast Crane and Equipment for 25 years and retired from her position as office manager in 2007. She was noted by her employer as a trusted and highly regarded employee. As a creative outlet, Glenna enjoyed making ceramics. Friends and family were often the recipients of her beautiful, personalized pieces. She enjoyed collecting crystal and had a great appreciation for beautiful, well-crafted pieces of different art forms, that she enjoyed displaying in their home. Each piece would typically have a story or sentimental value attached to it. She was also known for her beautiful and unique plants and flowers. Trilliums were among her favorite. Glenna was an excellent cook and loved to entertain friends and family using elegant table settings and décor. For many years, family and close friends gathered at her home on Christmas Eve for a traditional German dinner (for her German born husband) to celebrate the holidays. Glenna had a great love for her toy poodle dogs. Most family pictures of her include a poodle in her lap or cradled in her arms, like her beloved Gabbie above. Survivors include her husband Gunther; toy poodle, Heidi; and cousins from both sides of her family.

Memories & Tributes

So many good memories of times with Glenna come to mind - family gatherings, coffee and lunch dates with her and Gunther, sharing stories about our family and pictures, shopping for plants and hanging flower baskets in the spring, looking through local artist shops and antique stores and her plethora of recipes, and just hanging out. I have missed our long phone conversations where after resolving the ails of the world, Glenna would say, "Well, Mrs. Lincoln..." as if to say, "We've done all we can do for now." For many years, I loved decorating the Goos Christmas tree, as Glenna would talk about her favorite ornaments and after the holidays, we would carefully put them away for the next year. She had extraordinarily good taste and style and will always be remembered as a loved cousin and dear friend. Jo Lynn Dow
I had the opportunity to know Glenna through her husband Gunther, with whom I shared decades of work in Portland real estate, as well as assisting Gunther when he was President of the Portland Board of Realtors in 1994. With Gunther's German heritage and his preference, of course, for German food, we shared many wonderful meals together over the years, first at Der Rheinlander and then at Gustav's, as well as at the Goos home. Glenna was indeed an outstanding cook and she treated me to one of my most memorable Thanksgiving dinners. When I was home in Portland recuperating from major surgery in 1999, Glenna prepared a complete Thanksgiving feast with every part of the dinner individually wrapped. Gunther then drove all the way from Estacada to Portland to provide me with a wonderful dinner. Making that special effort to make sure I was not left out on Thanksgiving was just one example of how kind and thoughtful Glenna was. And it was wonderful over the years to observe not only the special relationship Glenna and Gunther had, but also to observe what a gentleman Gunther was in his interaction with Glenna, always treating her with respect and kindness and caring, which Glenna truly deserved. Glenna was one of the sweetest, funniest people I have had the honor of knowing. I worked at Barbara's Flowers and Coffee on Broadway in Estacada for years and had the pleasure of speaking to her daily when Gunther and her would come in. I grew quite close to her and I am deeply saddened today hearing of her loss. I will always remember her smile, her elegance and her stories of her life. I'm sending so much love to Gunther in learning of her passing. Lily Huffman
Sorry to hear this. When I was a kid, I used to go to hockey games with Genna and Gunther. They were good friends of my aunt and uncle. Evan Burton
