Betty Jean Green

Obituary

Betty Jean Green born December 5, 1931 in Fort Dick, California went to be with the Lord on April 6, 2012 surrounded by her loving family.

She was the granddaughter of Headman Frank Hostler of Howonquet of Smith River and of Headman William Scott of Nelechudun the great granddaughter of Yontockett.

Betty was a lifelong member and State Elder of the Smith River Indian Shaker Church; she was a Tribal member of Elk Valley Rancheria and served on Tribal Council from 1985 to 2000. After helping to establish United Indian Health Service she continued to serve on the Board for 35 years. And she spent her life fully immersed in her Culture, attending as many dances, ceremonies and gatherings as time would allow. She helped create the XUS-WE-YO Tolowa language book to help preserve the language of the Tolowa people.

The things she loved and enjoyed was taking picture, she always had a camera in her hand, bowling, playing Bingo and spending many hours on the beach looking for nacets and aggets. She has traveled many places to represent her Native people.

She was precede in death by her parents Fred Hostler and Laura Scott Hostler, husband John Green, Daughter Brenda Green Blake, brothers Thomas Brundin, Frank & Elmer Hostler, sister Darlene Richards and her grandson Jordon Green Lara.

She survived by her son John D. Green Sr. and wife Wanda, sister Viola Richards (William SR) Grand Children: LaWanda Quinnell (Matt), David L Gensaw JR and John Green Jr, Betty Toscano (Pedro) and Brendan Gensaw (partner Stephanie Huff)

Great Grandchildren: Tanner, Walker & Willie Gensaw, Caitlin, Akyah, Jaden, Gwen, Malahki, Nevaeh Green, Haydee Toscano, Virginia Quinnell, and Chase Adams.

Visitation will be held at Wiers Mortuary Chapel in Crescent City on Tuesday, April 10th from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. A wake will be held at the Smith River Shaker Indian Church on Tuesday evening starting at 6:00 pm.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 11th at the Smith River Indian Shaker Church at 1:00 pm with interment to follow at the Elk Valley Rancheria Cemetery located off Howland Hill Road in Crescent City.

Family and friends are invited for fellowship follow services at the Elk Valley Rancheria Community center located next to the Tribal office at 2332 Howland Hill Road, Crescent City, CA.
